Topic:  About Jesus

 Where was Jesus Baptized?

Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River.

Matthew 3:13-17  Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." NKJV

Let’s look at why He had to be baptized.  Jesus’ baptism was unique in that He did not have any sins to confess, He was sinless (without sin); that is why John didn’t want to baptize Him. Jesus said “permit it to be so…it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness”.

The law required all priests to be consecrated when they began, at about thirty years of age.

Exodus 29:4-5 Then bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water. 5 Take the garments and dress Aaron with the tunic, the robe of the ephod, the ephod itself and the breast piece. Fasten the ephod on him by its skillfully woven waistband. NIV

Jesus was baptized to set an example for us, and to identify with us.  Later, He will command us to make disciples and baptize them…

Philipians 2:7-8 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. NKJV

1 Peter 2:21-22  For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth";   NKJV

1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Jesus was also baptized to support the ministry of John the Baptist.  Later He would ask the Pharisees if John’s baptism was from God or from man.  It’s possible that they believed John was a prophet because Jesus calls him one and because John baptized Jesus.

Matthew 21:25-27 Where did John's right to baptize come from: was it from God or from man?" They started to argue among themselves, "What shall we say? If we answer, 'From God,' he will say to us, 'Why, then, did you not believe John?' 26 But if we say, 'From man,' we are afraid of what the people might do, because they are all convinced that John was a prophet." 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." How come Jesus never sinned?

Because He spent time everyday with the Father and lived in obedience to The Word.

1st, we know that Jesus was without sin because the Bible tells us all over the place.

During His trial to be crucified, He was declared by His enemies to be totally innocent 11 times:

By Judas who betrayed Jesus – Matt. 27:4
By Pilate six times – Matt. 27: 24, Luke 23:14,22; John 18:38; 19:4,6
By Herod Antipas – Luke 23:15
By Pilate’s Wife – Matt. 27:19
By the repentant thief – Luke 23:41
By the Roman centurion (an officer, over 100 soldiers) – Matt. 27:54

The apostles wrote of His sinless life (life of no sin), many times:

1 Peter 2:22 He committed no sin, and no one ever heard a lie come from his lips. TEV

Heb 4:15  Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. Today’s English Version

Heb 7:26 Jesus, then, is the High Priest that meets our needs. He is holy; he has no fault or sin in him; he has been set apart from sinners and raised above the heavens.  Today’s English Version

2nd, Isaiah prophesies about Jesus saying, He would spend time everyday with the Father in prayer preparing for the day ahead of Him.  He would hear from the Father the plan for the day and live in obedience to what the Father had called Him to do.

Isa 50:4-5 The Sovereign LORD has taught me what to say, so that I can strengthen the weary. Every morning He makes me eager to hear what He is going to teach me. 5 The LORD has given me understanding, and I have not rebelled or turned away from Him.         Today’s English Version

Isaiah prophesied it and Jesus did so.  He woke up and spent time with God the Father preparing for the day.

Mark 1:35 Very early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed. Today’s English Version

Luke 6:12 At that time Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God. TEV

John 8:28-29 I say only what the Father has instructed me to say. 29 And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him." Today’s English Version

3rd, we are told in the Bible that if we stay close to Jesus, and obey His words, like He was close to the Father,  we too can have victory over sin in our lives.  The closer we get to God, the further we will be from sin.  We are also told that if we are His disciples, we are not slaves of sin any more; we are free to obey God!

John 8:31-36  So Jesus said to those who believed in him, "If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; 32 you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."… 34 Jesus said to them, "I am telling you the truth: everyone who sins is a slave of sin 36 If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free. TEV

Rom 6:22  But now you have been set free from sin and are the slaves of God. Your gain is a life fully dedicated to him, and the result is eternal life.  Today’s English Version

Gal 5:16  I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. NKJV

Is the son of God an angel?

No, the son of God is God Almighty, the Beginning and the End.

God is one God made up of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; all three together make up our one God. If you take one of them out you end up with nothing. The Teaching of Jesus (Son of God), being an angel (Michael the Archangel), comes form the heretical (false) teachings of the Jehovah Witness church and Watchtower Society.   The Bible teaches that the Son of God (Jesus) is God Himself.

Jesus is totally 100% God, not a little god, not almost god, but the fullness of God in human form.  Let’s look at some Bible verses so we can be clear on this.

The Apostles said in speaking about Jesus:

Titus 2:13  looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, NKJV

Note the “Great God and Savior” is a title (another name) for Jesus Christ.

Col 2:9  For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily NKJV

Note the words all and fullness, teaching us that nothing is missing.

Jesus said about Himself:

John 10:30 I and My Father are one."  NKJV

John 10:38-39  …, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him." NKJV

The word “one” is the Greek word heis which means the “same kind”.

This is not talking about Jesus and the Father being on the same team or on the same side.  It plainly says that Jesus and the Father are one in the same.  One cannot exist without the other.

Philip asked Jesus, “Show us the Father and we will believe”.

John 14:9  Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? NKJV

The Son of God can’t be an Angel because they are created beings and God is eternal.

Ps 148:2-5  Praise Him, all His angels, Praise Him, all His hosts! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! 4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created. NKJV

God commanded and all of the things in this list were created by God.

In the next three verses we will see God say something about Himself, that only He is the First and the Last, a statement meaning that only He has always been and will always be.  In the book of Revelation, we see Jesus making the same claim.  This means that Jesus was never created; He is God.

Isa 44:6 "Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.

Rev 1:17-18 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.  18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen.

Read Revelation Chapter one and you will see that this is a direct statement made by Jesus of Himself.

When was Jesus Born?

We don’t know for certain His exact birth day, but we can make some guesses based off of what we see in the Bible.

We know Bethlehem sits at about 3000ft. elevation, and during the winter months it snows.  Based on Luke 2, the scene of the shepherds out in the field with the sheep can rule out the thought of Jesus being born in the winter months.  It would be the same as trying to camp out in Julian during the month of December; you would probably die, not to mention the poor sheep.

Luke 2:8-12 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger."  NKJV

The idea of Jesus born on December 25th is not from the Bible; it comes from a Roman Emperor named Constantine.  It was believed that Constantine became a Christian, and, because he was the ruler in that area he decided to change the pagan feast into Christian celebrations.

Because many historical things were going on during the time of Jesus’ we can narrow down His birth to be within 4-6 B.C.  here are some things to consider.

Herod the Great died in March of 4 A.D. we know from Matthew Chapter 2 that Jesus was born before his death within, 2 years or so.

John’s baptizing of Jesus when Jesus was 30 years old  in the year 27 A.D. based on who was governing and ruling in those areas.

Luke 3:1-4 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, NKJV

John is said by Luke to have begun to preach and baptize "in the fifteenth year of Tiberius" and Jesus "was about thirty years of age" (verse 23) when He was baptized by John. If the 15th year of Tiberius is dated as 12 A.D., this brings us to the year 27 A.D., as the year of Our Lord's baptism and makes the date of His birth in 5 BC.
