WHAT ARE THE SEVEN DEADLY
SINS?
This is primarily a teaching in Catholic Catechism classes.
The list is this: pride, envy,
gluttony, lust, anger, greed, slothfulness. The
Bible teaches that all sin brings death.
These things are found in the Bible but this actual list is not
found in one place; I will explain. The Bible teaches us about
all of these things in different verses as being sin. You also
have to understand that these are not the only things that are
sin (bad), in the Bible.
These are some listings of sins found in the Bible.
Romans 13:13-14
Let
us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness,
not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on
the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to
fulfill its lusts.
NKJV
Galatians 5:19-21
Now the works of the flesh are
evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies,
outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21
envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I
tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that
those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of
God.
NKJV
Exodus 20:1-17
1.)
Have no other
God.
2.)
Do not make
idols.
3.)
Do not misuse
God’s name.
4.)
Keep the Sabbath
day.
5.)
Honor your father
and mother.
6.)
Do not murder.
7.)
Do not have sex
out side of marriage.
8.)
Do not steal.
9.)
Do not lie.
10.)
Do not covet your
neighbor's things.
This is a short explanation of the seven sins:
1. Pride:
excessive belief in yourself. This interferes with your ability
to see yourself in a real way; you’re not perfect, and you need
God.
a.
Proverbs 8:13
The fear
of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil
way And the perverse mouth I hate.
NKJV
2. Envy:
is an excessive desire for another person’s abilities, position,
traits, and even life. They are Looking to live someone else’s
life and not wanting to deal with your own.
b.
Isaiah 26:11
LORD, when
Your hand is lifted up, they will not see. But they will see and
be ashamed for their envy of people; Yes, the fire of Your
enemies shall devour them.
NKJV
3. Gluttony:
is when someone eats more food that what your body needs.
c.
Proverbs 23:21
For the
drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness
will clothe a man with rags.
NKJV
4. Lust:
is an excessive craving for the pleasures of the body.
d.
Proverbs 11:6
… the
unfaithful will be caught by their lust.
NKJV
5. Anger:
when you act on feelings of displeasure like wrath, rage, fury …
e.
Proverbs 16:32
He who is
slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his
spirit than he who takes a city.
NKJV
6. Greed:
the desire for material wealth/gain. When someone wants more
than just their fair share.
f.
Luke 11:39
"Now you
Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your
inward part is full of greed and wickedness.
NKJV
7. Slothfulness:
is to avoid any kind of work, physical and or spiritual,
resulting in nothing.
g.
Proverbs 13:4
The soul
of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the
diligent shall be made fat.
KJV
Sin leads to death. These seven are just different expressions
of sin.
James 1:13-15
Let no one
say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be
tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each
one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and
enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to
sin; and sin,
when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

What is an Idol?
An idol is an image that represents a thing or person to worship.
They could be statues, pictures, temples, charms etc.
The
worshiping of idols is called “idolatry”. God commanded us not to
worship anything, even if it is made to represent Him; this is the 2nd
commandment.
· Exodus
20:4-5
"You shall not make for yourself
a carved image
—
any likeness of anything
that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth
beneath,
or that is in the water
under
the earth; 5
you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
· God
says in this verse that you are not to make any man-made images for
yourself. Not even of things in heaven, on earth, or in the sea. You
are not allowed to bow or worship them.
At
first, idolatry meant worship of images that represented false gods,
but it is also wrong to worship God through images.
· There
was a time when Israel made an image of a baby cow to represent God,
and God did not like it.
· Hosea
8:5-6
Throw out your calf-idol, O Samaria! My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity? 6 They are from Israel!
This calf-a craftsman has made it; it is not God.
It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria. NIV
Now
idolatry can also mean giving more importance to things or desires
more that to God. Anything that you love or care about more than
God, is an idol.
· Colossians
3:5
Put to death, therefore,
whatever belongs to your earthly nature:
sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is
idolatry. NIV
· 1
Peter 4:3-5
You have spent enough time in the
past doing what the heathen like to do.
Your lives were spent in indecency, lust, drunkenness, orgies,
drinking parties, and the disgusting worship of idols. 4 And now the
heathen are surprised when you do not join them in the same wild and
reckless living, and so they insult you. 5 But they will have to
give an account of themselves to God, who is ready to judge the
living and the dead. TEV
Simply said:
An idol can be anything and anyone that would take
your affections away
from God.

Does God punish us with sickness or death if we do something
wrong?
No, God doesn’t punish us now; He will punish all sin at the end of
the age.
1. In the past, God did punish sin and rebellion
immediately.
· Numbers
16:31-33
As soon as he had finished speaking,
the ground under Dathan and Abiram split open 32 and
swallowed them and their families,
together with all of Korah's followers and their possessions. 33 So
they went down alive to the world of the dead, with their
possessions. The earth closed over them, and they
vanished. TEV
· Dathan,
Abiram and Korah rebelled against Moses, the man of God, and God
judged them for it.
· Micah
6:13
"Therefore I will also make you sick by striking you, By making you
desolate because of your sins. NKJV
2. Now, in the present, God is allowing you to live
your life however you want. But when you die you will face the
consequence of your decisions or the blessings.
· Matthew
13:41-43
The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of
His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice
lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There
will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will
shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has
ears to hear, let him hear! NKJV
3. Mostly we punish ourselves by making bad or sinful
decisions. Some sins lead to physical death at the end of the road.
· The
homosexual life of sin leads to illness in the body and even death.
· Romans
1:27
Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned
in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is
shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error
which was due. NKJV
· Some
sins lead to death while others do not.
· 1
John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to
death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit
sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. NKJV
· Stealing
a dollar from mom’s purse will probably not kill you; stealing from
a drug dealer will.
· Lying
to your teacher will not kill you; lying to the police will.
· A
man on the news this week tried to threaten a police officer after a
traffic stop. The man said, “One of us is going to die today”, while
pulling out his hand from his pants. The man was shot and died.
After securing the scene, the officer saw that there was no weapon.

Does God punish us?
The
question is, who
is the “us”: believers or
unbelievers? Well, the answer is
“yes”, the Lord does punish unbelievers when they
die,
however He corrects believers while
they are alive.
God corrects the ones that He loves:
God corrects us while we are alive
in order to teach us and protect us.
Proverbs 3:11-12
My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
nor detest His correction;
12 For
whom the LORD loves He corrects,
Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
NKJV
God corrects and
teaches the ones that He loves to prevent us from hurting
ourselves. A good father will give a consequence to his child to
keep something bigger from hurting him. In the same way, people
correct their dogs to train them.
EXAMPLE: “If you run
into the street, I will give you one spanking.” The spanking is the
warning so the child doesn’t get hit by a car. If the child runs
into the street and a car hits him, did that happen because he
disobeyed dad? No, that is what dad was trying to save him from.
God will punish unbelievers:
This punishment doesn’t come until
the person dies; while the person is still alive they are given the
chance to give their life to God.
Matthew 13:49-50
So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth,
separate the wicked
from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire.
There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
NKJV
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9
In flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and
on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
NKJV
The option to obey
God is ours. It has been said God doesn’t send people to Hell, they
choose to go there. Every day you have the option to humble
yourself and surrender your life to God. If you do, you will be
blessed as His child on earth, but even more important, for
eternity. If you don’t, you will suffer the penalty of your own sin:
Hell.
Romans 6:20-23
When you were the slaves of sin, you were free from
righteousness. 21 What did you gain from doing the things that
you are now ashamed of? The result of those things is death! 22
But now you have been set free from sin and are the slaves of
God. Your gain is a life fully dedicated to him, and the result
is eternal life. 23 For sin pays its wage--death; but God's free
gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.
