Questions Asked By Students

Topic:  ANGELS AND SATAN

ARE GUARDIAN ANGELS REAL?

Yes, some angels are here to protect and assist only those who will go to heaven.

Hebrews 1:14 What are the angels, then? They are spirits who serve God and are sent by him to help those who are to receive salvation.                    Today’s English Version

In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus makes a reference about angels that are assigned specifically to people.

Matthew 18:10-11 "Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. NKJV

David talks in the Psalms about the protection and intervention of Angels.  Angels that would confuse the enemy and even watch over us so we don’t get hurt.

Psalm 35:4-5 Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor Who seek after my life; Let those be turned back and brought to confusion Who plot my hurt. 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, And let the angel of the LORD chase them.  NKJV

Psalm 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. NKJV

Psalm 91:10-12 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.    NKJV

In the New Testament we also see the Angels working to help believers. Helping the apostles get out of prison on more than one occasion and helping Paul, by encouraging him in a difficult situation.

Acts 5:19-20  But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 "Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life." NKJV

Acts 12:7-11 Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise quickly!" And his chains fell off his hands. 8 Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie on your sandals"; and so he did. And he said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me." 9 So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. NKJV

Acts 27:22-25 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24 saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.' 25 Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. NKJV

An Angel brought food for Elijah after a long trip.

1 Kings 19:5-8 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat." 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you." NKJV

So we see that among other things, Angels are sent to us as helpers, they are not our slaves but they do watch out for us.  They save us from enemies and help us out of hard times. They even meet our needs and bring us encouragement when we are down.

Always keep in mind that they are sent by God to us, so really it’s God who is taking care of us through these Angels.  We are to thank, worship and love God, not Angels, as some have done throughout history.

Do all angels look like men?

Angels are commonly seen as men but that is not the only way we see them in the Bible.

· Acts 1:10-11  And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,11 who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

· Mark 16:4-7  And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.

· Genesis 18:2-3  So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,

Some angels have one face tow faces and even four.

· Ezekiel 41:18-19 And it was made with cherubim and palm trees, a palm tree between cherub and cherub. Each cherub had two faces, 19 so that the face of a man was toward a palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion toward a palm tree on the other side; thus it was made throughout the temple all around.

· Ezekiel 10:14 Each one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, the second face the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

Some angels have wings.  Some two others have up to six.

· Exodus 25:19-20  And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat.

· Isaiah 6:2  Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

Some angels are covered with eyes all over their bodies.

· Ezekiel 10:12   And their whole body, with their back, their hands, their wings, and the wheels that the four had, were full of eyes all around.

· Revelation 4:6-8  Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

"Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"

IS SATAN REAL?

Yes, Satan is real.

We believe Satan, also known as Lucifer, to be real because the Bible teaches that he is real, not because some people have seen crazy things or have made up horror stories about the devil.

In the Old Testament of the Bible we see Satan tempting and persuaded Adam and Eave in the Garden of Eden.  Satan tried to make Job reject his devotion to God.  Satan even moved a mighty king like David to disobey the Lord and count the people.

Job 1:9-11 So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!"

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"

1 Chronicles 21:1-2 Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, "Go, number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring the number of them to me that I may know it."

The New Testament talks about him and Jesus makes 25 references of him too.  He was in the wilderness tempting Jesus to sin.  He was possessing Judas to betray Jesus.

Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Matthew 4:10-11 Then Jesus said to him,  "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

John 13:26-28 Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it." And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

Other names for Satan found in the Bible are:

Devil Evil One

Great Red Dragon

Serpent Of Old

Abaddon = Destruction Apollyon = Destroyer

Adversary

Beelzebul = Lord Of The Fly

Belial = Worthless God Of This World

Ruler Of This World

CAN SATAN CREATE?

No, only God is Creator, that is, only God has the ability to create something out of nothing.

Isaiah 40:25-26  "To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?" says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

Everything that was created, visible or invisible, in heaven or on earth was made by Him.  Satan cannot create anything because he is not God.  Satan can only manipulate God’s Creation.  Even humans can do this, for example:  God created trees man can make paper.   Do you see we didn’t create anything new we simply changed trees from one shape to another.

John 1:3   All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Jeremiah 27:5  'I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are on the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me.

God says I did it because I have the power.  If anyone else can do that then they have the power too, and that would mean that God is not all powerful.

Psalm 146:5-6  Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God,  6 Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever,

Once again, one of the things that identifies GOD as The GOD and separates Him from all of the false gods is the fact that He is Creator.

HAS SATAN BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS GOD?

No, Satan has not been around as long as God.

Satan is a created being just like all the other angels.  God alone is creator, and if God created him then that means that God was here longer than Satan.

Ezekiel 28:14-15  "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.

Ezekiel 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: …The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created.

WHY DID SATAN REBEL?

Lucifer was filled up with pride and thought he could be like God.

Lucifer was his name and he was an angel God created, but he filled himself with pride while in the presence of God and he actually thought that he could be better than God.  That is when he rebelled and was thrown out of heaven.

Ezekiel 28:13-17  You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: ... The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. 14 "you were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. 16 "… You became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; ...17 "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you.

Isaiah 14:12-15 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground,  You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; 14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.

DID GOD KNOW SATAN WOULD REBEL?

God is all knowing so, yes, God knew Lucifer would sin against Him.

Everything that God made was good, including Lucifer, but he was made with the ability to make his own choice.  Lucifer’s choice was to rebel against God.   God knows all things; He is Omniscient (all knowing), so yes he did know that Lucifer would sin and rebel against Him.

Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

Psalm 44:21 Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart

Psalm 139:1-4 O LORD, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
